Ambassador, Permanent Representative of Costa Rica to the United Nations in New York (2018-June 2022)
Ambassador Rodrigo Carazo is an experienced professional, academic and diplomat who has devoted the latter half of his career to making the world a better place. He is an entrepreneurial thinker and is skilled at navigating the influence of cultural, and geo-political change on industries, systems and people. He inspires trust and loyalty among colleagues and clients.
Mr. Carazo served as the Vice-President and President of UNICEF’s Executive Board (2021-June 2022) and is an elected as Member of the UN Human Rights Committee (2023-2026).
His professional development in the public sector includes: first Ombudsman (“Defensor del Pueblo”) of Costa Rica (1993-1997); Member of the Legislative Assembly (2002-2006).
His professional development in the private sector includes being a liberal professional since 1971 in the fields of Economics, Law and International Relations. He has also served as a consultant for International Organizations (Governmental, Intergovernmental, Non-Governmental) as well as for private entities.
He has 52 years of experience as an entrepreneur in commercial, industrial, tourist, agricultural and service sectors.
His academic background includes: serving as a university professor in Costa Rica, the United States and at the University for Peace; Member of the Board of the public Distance University in Costa Rica; he holds a Law Degree from the University of Costa Rica and a similar degree in Economic and Social Sciences from the University of Costa Rica, a PhD in Political Science and International Relations from the University of Geneva- Switzerland and has completed further studies in History and International Law.
Mr. Carazo speaks Spanish, English and French. He lives in Costa Rica with his wife and enjoys spending time with his four daughters and 11 grandchildren.
