Jackie Gerstein

Dr. Jackie Gerstein teaches gifted education for Santa Fe Public Schools; and graduate-level online courses for Walden and Antioch Universities. She is the author of the book, Learning in the Making: How to Plan, Execute, and Assess Powerful Makerspace Lessons, published by ASCD, and of a chapter “Moving from Education 1.0 Through Education 2.0 Towards Education 3.0” in an edited book, Experiences in Self-Determined Learning. Jackie believes that a responsibility of the 21st century educator is to share resources, ideas, and instructional strategies with other educators.

Creating a Classroom You Wished You Had as a K-12 Student

Participants will begin by exploring and learning about the differences between Pedagogy/Education 1.0, Andragogy/Education 2.0, and Heutagogy/Education 3.0; and how these models affected one's own education as a student. Then, during a hands-on and experiential activity, participants will build a school, a classroom, a learning environment that honors self-directed and self-determined learning; starting with building philosophical foundations continuing through actual classroom strategies and activities, and topping it off with setting up the classroom environment that honor learner agency.

Social Emotional Learning Through Technology

Educators often discuss assisting students in developing their social skills, personal identities, and good citizenship as part of a teacher's responsibilities in educating the whole child. Many are aware of research showing that social-emotional learning (SEL) improves academic performance, school climate, and personal success. But how much do they act on it? Technology, particularly social media, is often cited as a "place" where people demonstrate poor social skills, but there are many cases of teachers and students using the Internet to practice pro-social behaviors and digital citizenship. This session will highlight ways that educators can use technology to help students learn to manage their emotions, know themselves better, and choose actions that reflect their "best selves" - adding meaning and relevance to their school experience. Social networking, online media, and technology tools that support reflection, self-regulation, creative expression will be discussed.

The Mindset of the Maker Educator

Being a maker educator often requires developing a new mindset; a new set of skills and roles. Discover, through this presentation, first, why we are in a perfect storm for maker education in both formal and informal learning environments, and second, through a self-assessment, the characteristics and qualities of the mindsets of an educator who is embracing making education.

Workshop: "When a kid builds a model rocket, or a kite, or a birdhouse, she not only picks up math, physics, and chemistry along the way, she also develops her creativity, resourcefulness, planning abilities, curiosity, and engagement with the world around her" (Dougherty).

Through short presentations, exploration of online resources, and participation in several maker activities, participants will learn about and be able to implement into their own practices...:

*The educator as a maker mindset.
*Maker education within the theoretical constructs of experiential education and STEAM
*Best practices for integrating maker thought into one's own teaching environment.
*Tools and technology that can support maker education and STEAM.
*How to plan maker projects that use technologies with the maximum learning impact.
*How to make and create with found materials, inexpensive electronics, and online resources.
*A rationale of the benefits of maker learning for the educator and the learner.

Are You an Educator with a Growth Mindset: Developing a Growth Mindset

Research on the growth mindset shows that students who believe they can grow their basic abilities have greater motivation and higher achievement than do students who believe their abilities are fixed, and that teachers can influence student' mindsets. This session will provide educators with an overview of the growth mindset through: (1) exploring a variety of definitions and perspectives about growth versus fixed mindsets, (2) reflecting on and developing one's own mindset as an educator, and (3) exploring and developing strategies for developing, building and enhancing students' academic mindsets.

Goals of the Growth Mindset Workshop: Participants will:
*Be able to define and describe the characteristics of growth and fixed mindsets after viewing videos, and exploring online resources and research.
*Learn how mindsets drive both educators' and students' goals, effort, and performance.
*Be able to cite and share research that shows how growth mindsets improves academic achievement and improved positive behaviors.
*Assess one's own growth mindsets skills and attributes through online assessments, group polling, and the creation of a group slide presentation.
*Explore and develop, through online resources and group discussions, specific instructional strategies to help one's own student population enhance their growth and academic mindsets.
*Learn specific methods to teach students about growth mindsets.
